The beginning of a new semester is a busy time for the higher education community. It is no different for the NILOA team, where meeting with a variety of stakeholders and participating in important higher education conversations is the essence of our work.

August started with the Annual Teaching and Learning National Institute, held at The Evergreen State College in Washington. We also participated in the Learning Systems Network Convening, delivered a keynote speech at the Distance Learning Symposium, co-hosted a webinar with Taskstream titled “Assessment in a Learning Systems Paradigm” and participated in the Credential Engine Advisory Group Meeting.

The Learning Systems Network Convening was hosted by the Lumina Foundation between August 1-2, 2017. NILOA’s director, Natasha Jankowski, and assistant director, Gianina Baker, were in attendance. The purpose of this meeting was to bring together major organizations that lead movements to improve postsecondary learning outcomes and pathways to attainment to: strengthen the equity, efficiency, and effectiveness of existing and emerging pathways to credentials for all students; identify opportunities to connect and integrate frameworks, strategies, and tools across those movements; and advance new approaches to fostering, demonstrating and recognizing learning wherever it occurs.

A Distance Learning Symposium took place on August 24, 2017, at South Texas College. NILOA’s director, Natasha Jankowski, delivered a keynote speech entitled Using Assessment to Ensure Student Success: Connecting Meaningful Assessment in Distance Learning. The symposium’s goals included sharing evidence-based methodologies and techniques that could be used in distance learning and connecting with fellow faculty and staff who have experience with distant learning. The Credential Engine Advisory Group Meeting took place on August 28-29, 2017. NILOA’s director, Natasha Jankowski, who is a member of the higher education advisory group, attended this meeting. Credential Engine’s goal is to provide objective information such as the cost, requirements, competencies, job-relatedness, and quality assurance of credentials of all types. Credential Engine (CE) technologies supports the organization’s mission and objectives by increasing the transparency of, and connections to, credentialing and quality assurance information, and enabling an open applications marketplace.

An Assessment in a Learning Systems Paradigm webinar was co-hosted by Taskstream on August 30, 2017. The webinar was presented by NILOA’s director, Natasha Jankowski, and NILOA senior scholar, David Marshall, authors of the new book Degrees That Matter, which introduces a learning systems paradigm. The main purpose of the webinar was to teach participants about the paradigm and how it can inform shifts in perspectives on assessment. Participants also learned with whom they might be working to assess the success of both students and programs. Furthermore, the webinar examined the use of assignments as the bedrock of strong student learning.
